The NHTSA Warns of Cash for Clunkers Fraud
June 25th, 2009

The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration, the organization set to oversee the Cash for Clunkers program, is warning of fraudulent Web sites. The NHTSA says that a number of unofficial Cash for Clunkers sites have popped up recently with some offering to help consumers and dealers alike pre-register for vouchers. According to the NHTSA, these are likely just ploys to secure consumers’ personal information.

The truth is there’s only one official government Cash for Clunkers Web site, cars.gov. What’s more, consumers aren’t required to register for the program at all. Dealers, on the other hand, must register with the NHTSA in order to participate in the program. Once that’s been done, the dealer will then handle all of the paperwork necessary to apply the appropriate credit voucher toward the purchase of a new vehicle. Consumers don’t need to give up a social security number or any other personal information beforehand.
