Will there be a Cash for Clunkers 2.0?

For President Biden to reach his administration’s goal of reducing the greenhouse gas emissions by America in half by the year 2030.  With this huge number of slashed the detrimental environmental effects, this could have been caused by something. The culprit here are auto tailpipes.

With 279 million vehicles in the United States, that is indeed too much gas-powered vehicles in existence and replace them in less than a decade. Across the United States, there are 17 million vehicles are being sold by automakers every year. It would take for almost two decades to replace the entire number of cars even if the vehicles are being exchanged for electrical ones.

It takes 12 years before a car is said to be unfit for use in the American roads. This would mean that the vehicle will surely predominate the road for the next several years to come. The electric vehicle use can be a little delayed because the target with new car-sales can be difficult to be achieved. Thus, unless the government will not provide any rewards or incentives to encourage more Americans to get rid of their trucks and old cars and invest on various electric vehicles. This will surely reduce tailpipe emissions by almost close to fifty percent that would take far for the Biden administration to achieve this goal anytime soon.

It was cited by Christ Atkinson, a professor of mechanical engineering and director of smart mobility at Ohio State University that even if every new vehicle was an electric unit and it was entirely powered by renewable energy overnight which may take 10 years or more to achieve a fifty percent reduction in the gas emissions. This would simply mean that the different sectors of the American economy would significantly reduce the greenhouse gas emissions to fill up the gaps in the car industry.

The most probable source of quick reduction in the greenhouse gas emissions is the quick generation of electricity. Major efforts and strides have been exerted by this sector. Although Biden has rolled out his aims about the reduction of greenhouses gases. Yet his administration has not provided the details as to how he envisions and perceived the changes may be to each sector o the economy.

If the government strives to change the entire population of cars in the country from gas burning units into electrical ones, may take awhile and may take 20 years or more in the making. Todd Campau, the Associate Director of Automotive of IHS Marikit also cited that the number of gas-driven cars or vehicles in the country, is envisioned to grow by 284 million in 2025.

Furthermore, Todd also supported the statement that it will take for highly attractive government rewards or incentive program to lure and convince people to get rid of their cars which runs on gas. Something similar to the resurfacing of the 2009 cash for clunkers Program which have been proposed and promulgated by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer of New York state. Yet, this time, it will be a massive scale of incentive programs for newly purchased electrical vehicles. The proposed rebates may vary.  It may be 3,000 in minimum for car owners in order for them to put their gas -driven cars to the junkyards.
